DM>I was in a Radio Shack the other day and I overheard a salesperson selling
DM>someone a battery charger, and he was clearly claiming that it could recharg
DM>alkaline batteries. He even sold them ordinary RS alkalines, so we're not
DM>talking about the newfangled "rechargeable alkalines" which can be recharged
DM>something like 25 times.
They are selling a product called the "Super Charger" . I have one that
I ordered on one of the late night Infomercials on T.V. They do work if
you do periodic recharging while the cells are still good. They will not
recharge 'dead' cells like you can with NiCd's. They work real well if
you keep two sets of batteries for everything you use alkalines in. I've
been doing this and it's been a year now and I haven't had to replace
any batteries.
DM>I found no charger that claimed to charge ordinary alkalines.
Furthermore, DM>the catalog discussed the various battery types and the
only type listed wit DM>the word "rechargeable" were NiCd's.
This is understandable as it isn't actually a Radio Shack product. By
the way, was this the new catalog? They just released a new one within
the last couple of weeks but haven't had a chance to look a my copy.
They are still charging $2 for it by the way but have a $2 off coupon on
your first purchase. This makes it free if you are actually buying
sometrhing else at the time.
DM>ARE ordinary alkalines rechargeable?
As I pointed out above, yes they are somewhat. Just don't recharge
them repetitively to try to get them back up to the 1.5V. I have tried
this and the batteries start leaking. You may be better off in the
longrun trying something like the rayovac renewals although I have yet
to try these as I have never liked Rayovac Alkalines.

Subject: Are Ordinary Alkalines Rechargeable?
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
I was talking with a group on the air the other night and someone mentioned
that Radio Shack sometimes hire people who don't always know what they're
talking about.
I related a story about a recent visit, where the salesperson was selling
a customer a battery charger that recharged ordinary alkaline batteries.
We're not talking about those newfangled rechargeable alkalines that can be
recharged something like 25 times---I mean ordinary alkalines. The guy
sold the customer the batteries along with the charger---I saw the batteries.
It's my understanding that ordinary alkalines are not rechargeable. So I
say this on the air and someone else butts in and "corrects" me---he claims
RS has a "special" charger that can indeed recharge ordinary alkalines.
Not wanting to start an on-the-air argument, I bow out of the QSO and run
to my latest 1995 Radio Shack catalog. In it there's no charger that claims
to charge any kind of alkaline battery. Furthermore, there's a discussion
in the catalog about the different battery types and the only kind associated
with the word "rechargeable" is NiCd.
Unfortunately, by this time, the QSO had broken up and I was unable to chime
back in. So that other guy made me look like I was an idiot or something.
But, just in case---ARE ordinary alkalines rechargeable?

Subject: French UHF band is (almost) dead
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
Hi,
this is just a warning to those who may want to use UHF
in France.
Our UHF band is (almost) dead.
The first kick was to allow some part of the 433 MHz range to be
used without license for almost every purpose : remote control,
short range comm, etc... The power was intially limited to 10 mW
but has been raised to 500 mW, without any specifications on the
antennae. But who controls the actual output power ?
Next, the lowest part of the band [430 to 434] is constantly polluted
by the harmonics of a system called SYLTRAK, every 15 kHz. As a result,
Paris's UHF repeater has an awful "horse-like" background noise, and
UHF packet communication has become extremely painful.
At the moment, the 434 to 440 MHz part seems safe, but is reserved for
ATV.
And last, the ATV devoted 23 cm part has been requested by the civil
flight operation for other RADAR operation. Since we have a "secondary
status" on the all the 23 cm band, we fear that the whole band will soon
be completely unusable.
The 11 cm band has never been opened. It is required to have a permit
from the army, but they never grant it.
VHF :
The 6 meters band, which was opened between 50.2 and 51.2 under severe
restrictions will most likely be closed very soon, due to problems with
some security equipement embedded in trains.
Isn't France a paradise for hams ?
What to do ?
73 !

Msg #361 From: N4MM Date: 29-Aug 2356Z Subj: P5RS7, a dead duck.
ARRL DXCC News Release announces P5RS7 decision.
In response to continued questions concerning the P5RS7 operation of
December 1992 - January 1993, the following is provided:
While reviewing the original documentation and photographs, the DXCC staff
noted some apparent discrepancies. DXCC staff then requested some additionin
formation. After more than one year, additional infformation was received.
During that year, the ongoing investigation into the paperwork and
photographs suggested that the operation may have taken place from
another location. Documentation in support of P5RS7 accreditation
did not establish that operating permission had been granted by
appropriate authorities, nor did it establish that the operation took
place from the territory of North Korea.
After reviewing all available information, there will be NO DXCC credit
for the P5RS7 operation.
The file had been closed on this issue. This determination is based
upon Section I., 7) and 12) of the DXCC rules.

There is one aspect about learning code that no one has mentioned.
LISTENING is a more passive method of learning. One of the best ways
of learning anything is to involve other methods...especially physical
(motor) involvement. Sending code is no longer required for the
exams, so many people do not practice sending at all anymore. But, in
my opinion, learning and practicing to SEND is a tremendous aid in
learning to receive. Passive learning is not very efficient.

If use of W6RO (as W6RO) is contingent upon being a hotel guest, could it
be construed that W6RO is being used for commercial purposes, to promote
the hotel?
There is a difference, here, between someone who rents out their home with
a shack as a vacation cottage to someone who will operate the shack under
his own license, and a 'club' station attached to a hotel.
One would hope that all licensed amateurs would be invited to operate at
the landmark.

I assume that you are refering to figure 3 on page 10-8 in
The ARRL UHF/Microwave Experimenter's Manual.
> NOT! Look at incident angles and look at reflected angles
> and that is not the shape of the reflected wave. Unless
> I'm doing something wrong.
The surface of the moon is covered with all sizes of irregular structures
such as hills and stones (large and small). The signal is scattered in all
directions from these structures (assuming their size is about one
wavelength or larger). If we look at the picture, it shows only the large
mountains (craters). In the first picture a wave front (narrow pulse)
is approaching the surface. In the second picture only those scattered
signals that eventually are going to hit the receiving antenna on earth
are shown. These signals form a wave front which is a copy of the large
structures on the surface and this explains the dispersion (and hence
coherance bandwidth) of the signal. It also explains the libration fading,
since a slightly different wavefront will hit the receiving antenna and
some scattered signal cancel each other, when the direction and distance
between the moon and the EME station(s) vary.
